Portrait Page Design - Overview

Created by Lynne Darroch, Modified on Mon, 17 Nov at 5:09 PM by Lynne Darroch

Portrait management and page design is limited to Editor and Editors-in-Chief. Staffers may only add backgrounds, candid photos and elements to portrait pages.

Step 1: Import your portraits

Step 2: Add one or more portrait groups to a section

Step 3: Open a portrait page in the editor.

Step 4: Apply a layout preset

Optional customizations:

Step 5: Apply a portrait style preset

Step 6: Use advanced settings to further customize the general layout: the portrait grid, the portrait layout, the labels and the page title formatting.
Step 7: Make style changes to enhance your design: portrait image border effects, portrait title font, and portrait label font

It is strongly recommend to create separate sections for your portrait flow. Grid settings apply to all groups within a single sections, so create one section/flow for each group that needs custom formatting.

  • Create one section for staff portraits.
  • Create separate sections for each grade.
  • Optionally create a separate section for graduating class portraits.

Anatomy of a portrait page

A. Portrait Grid – the arrangement of all elements on the page. Grid style can include label placement (under image, side), featured images, and many other design options (alternating rows/columns, arcs, jumbled angle, etc.)

B. Page Title – can contain auto-generated text or custom text, and may be styled like any other text frame (font, size, color)

C. Portrait Images – added to the grid based on the groups selected in the portrait wizard. Borders, shape, shadow may all be customized.

D. Labels – display the name, salutation or job role of a person and are placed below the portraits or to the side of the grid. Senior class can also include quotes and memories.

A portrait template refers the portrait image + label group, plus other elements applied per person on the grid. A portrait template may have a simple configuration with one image and text frame, or it can be complex with two portraits, additional text frames and decorative elements. Consult the Portrait Template Look-Book article to review the many creative options available in Memento.

Portrait Grid Settings versus Portrait Styling Options

Grid settings refer to the overall configuration of your page:

  • the number of rows/columns
  • alignment rules for the last row of portraits
  • if there are featured portraits
  • the portrait template (one or two photos, decorative elements, text position)
  • the label position (centered or side labels)
  • the label contents (salutation, first name, last name, job title, etc.)
  • the page title size and where it should appear (all pages, first page only)

Grid settings are controlled on the Portrait tab, and requires a book check-out because changes made to the grid may cause a reflow, resulting in a change in the number of pages in your book.  Grid settings are applied to an entire section at at time.

Grid settings from one portrait section may be copied to another section via the Advanced tab's Portrait Grid area.

Portrait styling refers largely to decorative choices applied to the frames on your page.

  • Image frame border shape, width, color, and shadows
  • Label font attributes
  • Page title font and content editing
  • If using a portrait template that includes additional graphics -- image f/x, shape border/fill

Styling changes are applied by directly clicking on the page elements, then choosing scoping -- apply to an individual frame, to all like-type frames on the page, or to all like-type frames in the section.

Styling may be copied from one frame, one page or one section to another via the toolbar over the selected portrait frame.

Portrait Page FAQ

  • Can I place teachers and assistant teachers at the front of their class?

Yes! This is done in the portrait manager. Assign the teacher to their class (same grade, teacher/homeroom) and use assign role to identify the teacher from the students. They will move to the top of their page and can even be featured in a larger image frame, in line or on a separate line as their students.

  • Can two or more groups be placed on the same page?

Yes! The portrait page editor lets you turn off breaks between groups. One group will start right after then next, including its title. Customize your rows/columns to get the correct number of images to appear on the page, and use knockouts to remove extra frames to create a clean break at the bottom of the page.

  • Can I copy the grid settings or portrait styling from one section or page to another?
Yes! Advanced Portrait settings include the ability to select another section in your book to quickly copy the grid setting to it, and portrait styling (image frames, text styling, etc.) may be copied and applied to other portraits, pages and sections.

  • Can teachers appear on their classroom page and the staff page?

Yes! In the portrait manager, duplicate their records, assigning one copy to their class' grade and teacher/homeroom assignment, and the other copy to the grade assigned to staff.

  • Can I change the text in title above the portrait group?

Yes! Just click on the title on the page, and use the text editor to customize it.

  • Can change row/column settings to be different on separate pages within a section?

No, all portraits within a single section will have the same row/column settings.

  • Can I make a special portrait page for my senior/graduating class, with extra text and photo options?

Yes! Memento uniquely provides layout options to make truly custom pages for your senior class. Include two images (portrait + graduation or baby picture) and two text fields for quotes and/or memories.

  • Can I delete someone out of the grid in the page editor?

No, portraits are removed either by excluding them or deleting them in the portrait manager.

  • Can I correct typos in the name labels in the editor?

No, all changes to the information linked to portraits is handled in the portrait manager. Updating the portrait manager will update your portrait pages.

  • How do I send my portrait pages to get teachers to check names and enrollment?

Generate pdf proofs of individual pages, sections or the entire book. These can be sent to your staff for verification.
